Beyond The Veil
GENERAL SETTING INFORMATION
Supernatural characters in BtV will all have the “Secret – Veil” disadvantage (-30). Should they break the rules and pierce The Veil so that “mundanes” are aware of it then they will be most likely be killed by one or other of the factions who keep the Veil. If it’s a minor offense they might get away with long imprisonment. If the focus of play is primarily about mundanes slowly discovering the extraordinary then supernatural player characters will also have an Unusual Background (Veil) advantage (30).
Players can choose a wide variety of roles in BtV. Some examples include: Magic user of varying types, supernatural creature, or a mundane human who has somehow slipped over to see Beyond The Veil (e.g. Black Chamber special ops, Illuminati member, vampire hunter etc.). However, even the mundane denizens of The Veil are hardly “normal”. There is also, obviously, room to begin with utterly mundane human investigator/adventurers with no knowledge of what lies Beyond The Veil so that the characters may gradually begin to see – and perhaps become “monsters” themselves.
The campaign is fairly cinematic. Starting characters can begin with anything from 150 points upwards depending upon roles, although an all-extraordinary group should probably begin with upwards of 250 points. The base Tech Level is TL8.
Mana Level: Earth in the BtV campaign is a normal mana world.
Magical Ability: The main magic system for human mortals is the Ritual Magic/Book system from Thaumatology. Some supernatural creatures will also be able to use such magic but others will have innate supernatural abilities which are based upon Powers. All non-Ritual magical powers should be built using advantages and a modifier (magical, chi, divine, spirit, elemental), and will often have limitations. The option to use an Energy Reserve for fatigue is allowed. No spells from “magic” will be used but their effects can be duplicated as advantages. If using Powers, Magery becomes a Talent, providing basic magical ability and, at higher levels, a bonus to success rolls involving magical powers.
